Granny’s Warm Apple Surprise

Do you ever want a yummy dessert or afternoon snack that is sweet yet hold some nutritional value? Now I am not saying that this is a healthy meal by far,  however with some of the ingredients it helps bring up the nutritional value some.  Here is a great recipe I also added the changes that I make when making this.

What You Need:

  • 4 Winesap apples ( I use Granny Smith apples I have also used pears for this)
  • 1/2 C sugar
  • 1/2 C nonfat dry milk
  • 2/3 C quick-cooking oats, uncooked
  • 1/4 C coconut, flaked (usually I leave this out)
  • 1/4 C almonds, chopped (I prefer Pecans when I make mine)
  • 1/4 C packed brown sugar
  • 2  TBSP wheat germ
  • 2 TBSP sesame seed
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 C butter or margarine

How to Make It:

  1. Peel the apples, remove the core and slice into thin slices.
  2. Place 12 slices to the side.
  3. Place the remaining apple slices in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Add the sugar and dry milk and toss to coat.
  5. Layer the apple slices into a casserole dish.
  6. Place the 12 apple slices set to the side over the top.
  7. Bring oven temperature to 375 degrees.
  8. Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil.
  9. Bake 12 minutes.
  10. Remove but leave the oven on.
  11. Place the oats, coconut and almonds together in a large mixing bowl.
  12. Add the brown sugar, wheat germ and sesame seeds.
  13. Sprinkle with the cinnamon and nutmeg.
  14. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender or 2 forks until mixture becomes coarse and crumbly.
  15. Remove the aluminum foil from the casserole dish and sprinkle the crumb mixture over the top of the apples.
  16. Return the uncovered casserole to the oven and continue baking 15 minutes or until a golden brown on top.

Serves 6

This makes a wonderful fall dessert.  Serve warm with a dollop of yogurt to the top for a special treat.
