When you were a child, you probably enjoyed a fresh-from-the-oven cookie and an ice-cold class of milk. Chances are your children like them, too. Don’t be surprised when your child asks, “Mom, can we celebrate National Cookie Month?”
You won’t find National Cookie Month designated anywhere in the Congressional record. The President never proclaimed the day, but that doesn’t mean that people aren’t itching to celebrate it. There’s never been a better excuse to make or buy and eat cookies.
Why do we have holidays in the first place? Usually a holiday is created to honor or commemorate something or someone. With National Cookie Month, it gives you a chance to try new cookies all month long. Maybe you need to pull out an old recipe your grandmother made and enjoy it with your children. Perhaps you want to start a new tradition of your own where you make cookies with your children. Whatever your reason for wanting to celebrate the month, make sure you enjoy it with loved ones.
Cookies in the United States and Canada are different than cookies in other parts of the world. They are a small, flat, baked dessert that can be made in various forms and shapes. In other parts of the world, this type of dessert would be called a biscuit.
You can make cookies out of a variety of ingredients but many of them have sugar, spices, chocolate, butter, and some type of nut or dried fruit. They can either be baked until they are somewhat soft or very crisp. How soft the cookie ends up being is totally dependent upon how long they are baked.
Rolled cookies are popular at Christmas, bar cookies are great when you don’t have a lot of time, and dropped cookies are irregularly shaped. Other types of cookies include pressed cookies, refrigerator cookies, molded cookies, and fried cookies.
One of the most well-known cookies was created at the Toll House Inn by Ruth Wakefield. The Toll House Cookie, made with chocolate chips, is one of the most popular cookies for new cooks to try. This is definitely one of those cookies that are best straight out of the oven.
Other favorite cookies include oatmeal raisin, peanut butter with a kiss on top, shortbread, and sugar cookies. If the sound of these cookies has your mouth watering, you don’t have to wait until Cookie Month to enjoy them. You could also try some new cookie recipes.
Cookies are one of the favorite treats of childhood, and enjoyed by quite a few adults. If you happen to hear, “Mom, can we celebrate Cookie Month?” think back to your own childhood. Then dig out your favorite recipe and bake some cookies to celebrate the month.
